Breast cancer affects many of us. My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 38. It is devastating, but it can be cured if found early.
If you have medical insurance, you may find it hard to imagine what it is like to have pain in your breast that could be cancer, but you are not be able to go to a doctor for a check up because you don’t have insurance or the money to pay for the visit.
I saw a lady not long ago who came to me suffering with a breast mass that had grown so large that it had eaten through her skin. When I walked in the room to see her, I could smell the rotting flesh. I asked her why she waited so long before seeing someone. She told me she waited over a year until she became eligible for Medicare because she couldn’t afford to see a doctor. The day she walked into my office was the day she had received her Medicare card in the mail.
Stories like this aren’t that uncommon. It is heart breaking to hear stories just like this one, but what is worse is having to turn away someone because she doesn’t have the ability to pay.
That is why I and my husband decided to make a gift to Florida Hospital Foundation, part of Florida Hospitals/Adventist Health System in Orlando, Florida to help women get free mammograms and have their breast symptoms evaluated.
This fund, Jennie Yoon Buchanan M.D. Breast Cancer Fund Inc., a 501c3 non profit organization, isn’t enough to help everyone who needs it. That is why we need to continue to raise funds so more women could be helped and their breast cancers can be found and treated.
